Working with the Junior Rangers
As a part of the work of Guias Unidas and located in Cafe Puma, I am working with a group of young people we call the Junior Rangers. This educational program includes English classes and a variety of activities that bring their awareness to the history and ecology of Ometepe island and teaches them how to preserve and protect their environment. As they grow older and seek out employment they will have the opportunity to learn how to become guides for ecotourists who visit the island. This is so important as it is important for economic needs to support the beauty and uniqueness of the ecology of their home.
Junior Rangers Field Trip Mural is coming along!
It is great to be able to do this in the light. The kids are getting excited about the field trip as are Kate, Jeff, and I. Plans are to go to the other side of the island to an area that has 2000 petroglyphs, to see a coffee plantation and coffee cooperative. A highlight…
Field Trip!!! Getting ready by painting a mural.
Each of our Junior Rangers has researched an indigenous animal or plant to draw on our mural in anticipation of the upcoming field trip across the island. An electrical outage did not stop us today!
Why Junior Rangers?
Guias Unidas is teaching the young to have an appreciation for and responsibility for their environment and as climate change becomes a looming issue for survival for the planet these efforts to teach young people their responsibility to their environment are incredibly important.
